What is the importance of background/subject relationship in a composition?
Project Directions: For this assignment, you will combine two scanned objects and a scanned background into a composite “photo.” OBJECTIVE(s): · Using a scanner · Using Photoshop Manipulation · Layering
ASSESSMENT(s): · Planning · Media Use · Composition · Participation · Artist Statement/Critical Questions
Creating Image using Layers: 1. Place the fabric or paper on the scanner and scan it. 2. Place your objects on the scanner and scan them. 3. Open the image of the fabric or paper in Photoshop and make any corrections or adjustments that may be needed. This will become the background for your final image. 4. Leave this image open in Photoshop, but minimize it. 5. Open up the image of the object and make any adjustments needed for that image. Use the Lasso Tools to select the object. Copy the object. 6. Bring the background image back up and paste the object onto the background image. This creates a separate layer for the object, and will allow you to resize it to fit the background. You can also place the object wherever you want on the background. 7. Copy and paste other images of the object if you choose. Change their size and position on the background.
Task Exercise #3 Layers, Hue, Saturation, Color Removal, Contrast
Select a colorful image to manipulate in Photoshop. You will open the picture in Photoshop and divide it into three layers. You will leave one layer alone. On one layer you will remove the color (Enhance>Adjust Color>Remove Color…or…Shift + Ctrl + U) and experiment with brightness and contrast (Enhance>Adjust Lighting>Brightness/Contrast). On the remaining layer you will experiment with hue and saturation (Enhance>Adjust Color> Adjust Hue/Saturation).
Assessment:
3 layers
Hue
Saturation
Color Removal
Contrast
Task Exercise #4 Lasso, Layer Rotation/Flip, Cloning
You will select an image of a person to open in Photoshop. Using the lasso tool you will select the person and copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) it as a new layer. You will flip the layer horizontally to create a mirror image (Image> Rotate>Flip Layer Horizontal). Create another layer and experiment with creating layers and rotating.
Another way to copy part of the image is to clone. First you will need to flatten your layers (Layer>Flatten Image). Select the clone stamp tool on the icon tool bar. Alt + click on the part of the image you want to clone. Using your stylus start coloring in where you want your clone to be. Make sure you pay attention to the crosshairs on the part you are cloning. Notice your crosshairs—that is what you are cloning.
Assessment:
Copy/Paste part of image
Mirror image of figure
Flip/Rotate layer
Cloning
Task Exercise #5 Smudging edges, Bevels, Shadows
You will select an image of an object to open in Photoshop. Using the lasso tool you will select the object and copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) it as a new layer. You will smooth the edges of the object with the smudge tool.
Take your new layer and drag it to the new layer icon to create a duplicate layer. Experiment with layer styles. Try different bevel looks. Duplicate your original new layer and experiment with different shadows.
Using these techniques will help you give the illusion of depth with your scanned objects.
